Artist Statement
Burak Karavit constructs visual narratives from fragments of reality. Working across photography, digital collage and lenticular imagery, his practice explores human relationships, identity, perception, memory and the contradictions of contemporary life. Karavit's images are often built through the accumulation and reconstruction of photographic elements. From a distance, they present a unified visual world; at closer range, individual fragments, gestures and details begin to reveal themselves, allowing the image to unfold gradually rather than be understood at once.
This approach also gave rise to Visual Biography, an artistic concept developed by Karavit in which history, identity and collective memory are reconstructed through intricate, multilayered collage compositions. By bringing together archival imagery, historical research and visual storytelling, each work transforms a complex narrative into a single visual experience, revealing new connections and details through closer observation.
This relationship between the whole and its individual parts has remained central to his practice. Over time, movement and the viewer's physical position have also entered the work. Through lenticular processes and sequential imagery, a single composition can contain multiple visual states, making perception dependent upon where the viewer stands and how they move in relation to the artwork.
Karavit's recent work turns increasingly toward more intimate human narratives, while continuing his exploration of constructed reality, concealment and revelation. Rather than presenting a fixed interpretation, the work invites viewers to discover meaning through their own position, experience and memory.
Artist Biography
Burak Karavit is a New York-based visual artist whose practice encompasses photography, digital collage, constructed imagery and lenticular works.
Born in Ankara in 1974 and raised in Istanbul, Karavit developed an early relationship with photography after receiving his first camera from his father as a child. He later studied at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts and began his professional career in graphic design and art direction, experiences that helped shape his approach to composition, image construction and visual narrative.
Karavit's fine-art practice developed through large-scale photographic collages assembled from individually constructed visual elements. Works including Yin & Yang, Plastic Dreams, Hope and Freedom or Slavery explore human behavior, social structures, environmental concerns and the relationship between individual experience and collective life.
His practice later expanded into lenticular and sequential imagery, introducing movement and changing viewpoints into the work. In pieces such as Walk in My Shoes, the viewer's physical position becomes part of experiencing the artwork, allowing different visual states to emerge as the viewer moves.
Karavit is also the creator of Visual Biography, an artistic concept through which the history, identity and collective memory of a subject are reconstructed within a single multilayered visual composition. His monumental Vakt-i Fenerproject brought this concept to life through an intricate visual chronicle spanning more than a century of Fenerbahçe's history, combining archival imagery, cultural memory and artistic interpretation into a unified composition.
After an extended period focused on Visual Biography and other creative projects, Karavit returned to his personal studio practice in New York in 2026 and is currently developing a new body of work.
